Ray Medford has just been elected Lincoln High School Senior Class President, most of his classmates who truly admire his accomplishments. In being used to winning, he is gracious in the win as his opponent Dick is gracious in the loss. But in being the captain of the debating team and having won the state championship two years in a row, Ray is surprised not only in finishing second in the district extemporaneous speaking competition, but finishing second to Marilyn Jackson, his classmate who he had been asked to coach in she having had no experience in public speaking before joining the team. As such, Ray has given Mr. Murray, the team coach, his notice of quitting before the state championship, Ray's feelings about the loss probably not helped by his friends and family ribbing him about not winning. Did either Ray or his friends and family do the right thing in this situation?
