Plot summary

Teenage Laura (not her real name, and not the real names of others she mentions) tells the story about the dangers of gossip. She and Jean are best friends. Both in the pep club, Laura is on the nominating committee and Jean is a prime candidate for the position of next year's club president, a position she would relish holding. While Jean doesn't want any preferential treatment in being Laura's friend, she is afraid that others may see her best friendship with Laura as an unfair advantage. As such, Jean asks Laura to tell her if there ends up being any issue in what is otherwise certain to be her nomination. Jean is most concerned about the "talk" classmate Frida generally circulates, while fun to listen to, is often not based in fact. While the directive within the nomination committee is for one member apiece to conduct a background check on any perspective nominee, Jean assigned to Laura, and that they are to keep discussions within the committee solely to committee meetings, Laura may not be immune to believing Frida's subsequent gossip, most of it swirling around Jean, including her seen going off with Laura's boyfriend, Jim, and being involved in a potential cheating scandal.
