Verdun is a small city in northeast France, on the banks of the Meuse river. It’s known as the site of the WWI Battle of Verdun. Verdun's battlefields are marked by museums and memorials, such as the Douaumont Ossuary, with the remains of more than 100,000 soldiers. Northwest of the city is the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery. In the town, the huge Porte Chaussée gate was once part of the city's medieval walls.
Somme is a department of France, located in the north of the country and named after the Somme river. It is part of the Hauts-de-France region. It is bordered by Pas-de-Calais and Nord to the north, Aisne to the east, Oise to the south and Seine-Maritime to the southwest.
Ypres (leper), is a town in the Belgian province of West Flanders. It's surrounded by the Ypres Salient battlefields, where many cemeteries, memorials and war museums honor the battles that unfolded in this area during World War I. After being destroyed in the war, many important buildings were carefully reconstructed, including Gothic-style Sint-Maartenskathedraal (St. Martin's Cathedral) and its soaring spire.
