Penang is a state in northwest Malaysia comprising mainland Seberang Perai and Penang Island. On the island, the state capital of George Town is home to landmarks such as colonial Fort Cornwallis, the ornate Chinese clan house Khoo Kongsi and the Kapitan Keling Mosque, all testaments to centuries of foreign influence. Malacca City (also spelled Melaka) is the capital of the coastal state of Malacca, in southwestern Malaysia. At its center, Jonker Street, Chinatown’s main thoroughfare, is known for antique shops and its night market. Nearby, the 17th-century Chinese Cheng Hoon Teng temple has ornate decorations and multiple prayer halls. A green, 3-tiered roof tops the 18th-century, Javanese-influenced Kampung Kling Mosque.
Ipoh is a city in northwestern Malaysia, known as a gateway to the Cameron Highlands hill station. In the former Hakka Miners’ Club, Han Chin Pet Soo is a museum about the tin-mining industry and Hakka community. Sam Poh Tong is a Buddhist temple in a limestone cave. To the south, Kellie’s Castle is an unfinished mansion built by a Scottish planter. Southeast, the vast Gua Tempurung cave has dramatic rock formations.
The Little Nonya (2008)
A story that spans several decades, it tells the life of Yue Niang (Jeanette Aw), a pretty little Nyonya who is skilled in Peranakan, also known as Straits Chinese, cooking and sewing. Growing up in a traditional family, she is discriminated against as the granddaughter of a lowly second wife, a situation made worse by her mother's disapproved union with a Japanese photographer. Yue Niang's beauty and kindness attracted the attention of many suitors, but incur the jealousy of her cousin. She soon catches the eye of a rich, young man who had just returned from overseas, but she loves only Chen Xi (Qi Yu Wu), a rich man disguising as a 'penniless' driver. He is touched by her innocence and kindness, and falls deeply in love with her. But under immense pressure, he is forced to marry Yue Niang's cousin instead. Yue Niang, on the other hand, is sold to a local gangster. She impresses him with her fearlessness, and becomes his sworn sister. She embarks on a journey to carve out her own life and succeeds despite several setbacks. However, there is still no sign of a man she truly loves.
