Plot summary

John Found, a well-educated American Indian, works as an interpreter on an army post in the West. Although John Lane, a post officer, loves Katie O'Day, a rancher's daughter, he becomes the amorous target of the widowed Mrs. Van Allen. To rid herself of Katie, Mrs. Van Allen starts a rumor that Lane has a wife in an insane asylum. In spite of Katie's sudden cold behavior, Lane spurns Mrs. Van Allen, who then turns her attentions on John Found. Found proposes to the widow but is rejected with a brutal racial slur. Humiliated, Found uses his position to incite the local Indians. After attacking the O'Day ranch, the Indians besiege the unguarded post, and Found drags Mrs. Van Allen through the post by her hair, eventually causing her to die of fright. Entreated by Startled Fawn, his Indian lover, to flee, Found escapes unharmed, and the army troops defeat the remaining Indians. Lane convinces Katie of his bachelorhood, and they happily reunite.
