The Secret of Lost River (1915)
Pierre Vignol, an artist wintering in Arizona, is bitten by a snake. His friend Tom Hornby takes him to Padre Francisco, who prescribes for the bite. Tom and Pierre return to Tom's cabin where Tom takes care of him. Later Tom discovers a tube in Lost River which proves to be a painting and Pierre takes it to Padre Francisco. The Padre reads him an interesting history of Fr. Bartolomeo, founder of the Mission, and of how the painting came to be discovered in Lost River, for it had been thrown there by a monk when the Mission was attacked by the Indians after the Chief's daughter was abducted by a villainous Spaniard. Tom takes the painting to New York where he sells it and gives the money to Tom's wife, as Tom had been too poor to bring her or their baby to Arizona. The story ends with Tom's reunion with his wife and baby and the artist's rehabilitation in Tom's mind, as for a moment he had doubted his honesty.
