Next door neighbors Sarah Inman and Ron Johnson used to be friends when they were children, but have drifted apart now that they're in senior high school. While Ron's parents have let him use their recreation room to have a party most Friday evenings, Sarah never goes despite Mrs. Inman learning from Mrs. Johnson that they are open parties i.e. no invitations are issued in any of Ron's friends welcome. It's not that Sarah doesn't know about the parties in she being able to see and hear them from her bedroom where she is most Friday nights in doing her homework, but she, immersed in her own world, has no interest in any of the people who would attend Ron's party, especially recently elected class president Bill Tyler who she believes coasts in life based on his popularity. And while Ron wouldn't turn her away if she were to show up, he really would prefer she not come in his belief, the prevailing attitude of most of their classmates: that she's a snob. Largely friendless Sarah, while wanting to be liked and in that respect is not really happy, has no idea of that prevailing belief about her. Ron would rather not specifically invite Sarah as his mother wants him to do in believing doing so would only elevate her already self-perceived high standing of herself. But he does do so and she does attend on the urging of her parents. The question then becomes what will happen in this clash of their two worlds.
