Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (usually shortened to Chamonix) is a resort area near the junction of France, Switzerland and Italy. At the base of Mont Blanc, the highest summit in the Alps, it's renowned for its skiing. Year-round, cable cars take visitors up to several nearby peaks with panoramic views, including Aiguille du Midi above town, and Pointe Helbronner, across vast glacier fields on the Italian border.

Montroc is a hamlet in eastern France, located in the territory of the commune of Chamonix. Several houses at Poses 150 m north-east of Montroc were destroyed on 9 February 1999 by a slab avalanche from Bec du Lachat and Mont Peclerey on the Mont Blanc massif, killing 12 people.

Laid-back Argentière is a gateway to the Grands Montets area, accessed via the Plan Joran cable car and offering skiing and snowboarding, plus panoramic glacier views. In summer, trails attract hikers and mountain bikers. Built in 1726, the village church has a gilded altarpiece and a baroque bell tower. Ski rental shops and souvenir stores line Rue Charlet Straton, along with crêperies and pizza places.
