Tokyo, Japan’s busy capital, mixes the ultramodern and the traditional, from neon-lit skyscrapers to historic temples. The opulent Meiji Shinto Shrine is known for its towering gate and surrounding woods. The Imperial Palace sits amid large public gardens. The city's many museums offer exhibits ranging from classical art (in the Tokyo National Museum) to a reconstructed kabuki theater (in the Edo-Tokyo Museum).

Japan is an island country in East Asia, located in the Pacific Ocean off the northeast coast of the Asian mainland. It is bordered on the west by the Sea of Japan and extends from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea in the south.

Nicknamed the skyscraper district, Nishishinjuku is known for its sleek high-rises containing offices, hotels, and penthouse cocktail bars. Observation decks at Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building command sweeping views over the city, while Shinjuku Central Park offers a tranquil green space with an art gallery and the centuries-old Kumano Shrine. Nearby, Lumine the Yoshimoto theater stages rowdy comedy shows.
