The main card action included the first ever UFC Middleweight Championship bout, Frank Shamrock v Kevin Jackson, a Heavyweight Championship bout, Randy Couture v Maurice Smith, a four-man heavyweight tournament and a Superfight. On the undercard a four-man lightweight tournament with Rafael Carino, Francesco Maturi, Conor Quinn and Saeed Hosseini produced the inaugural lightweight champion for under 185 pounds.
