Tall, strong vagabond Luis rejects the work an old gentleman offers him, causing his outrage. In his erratic walk, Louis reaches the top of Mounte Oscuro, where Julia, widow of a writer, lives with their daughter Blanca. Despite his initial resistance, Luis ends up staying with Julia to help her work the land--which sows gossip in the neighboring village. Then Blanca falls ill, and when Luis goes to town for the doctor, it is none other than the old gentleman that Luis offended long ago.
