Beach resort Palavas-les-Flots lies along the Mediterranean Sea, backed by several lakes and bisected by the Lez River. In an 18th-century fort, Musée Albert Dubout displays comic posters. Luna Park Palavas has fairground rides, while beaches offer calm water for swimming and water sports. Al fresco seafood restaurants, pizzerias, and ice cream parlors line busy streets, alongside surf shops and souvenir stores.
Madrid, Spain's central capital, is a city of elegant boulevards and expansive, manicured parks such as the Buen Retiro. It’s renowned for its rich repositories of European art, including the Prado Museum’s works by Goya, Velázquez and other Spanish masters. The heart of old Hapsburg Madrid is the portico-lined Plaza Mayor, and nearby is the baroque Royal Palace and Armory, displaying historic weaponry.
Hérault is a department on the Mediterranean coast of southern France. The city of Montpellier is known for its 14th-century cathedral and Musée Fabre art museum. La Grande-Motte and Palavas-les-Flots are seaside resorts towns with fine-sand beaches. Southwest is large Étang de Thau lagoon, with fishing villages and oyster farms. The Canal du Midi leads to the town of Sète, near the Cap d’Agde naturist beach resort.
Vichy is a city in central France. It’s known for its spas and eclectic architecture. The Eglise Saint-Blaise church connects to the Notre-Dame-des-Malades, an art deco church featuring frescoes and stained glass. Recitals and ballets are held at the art nouveau–style Vichy Opera House. The Musée Surréaliste François Boucheix showcases the work of this surrealist artist. Trails cross the riverside Napoleon III Park.
