Auckland is one of the 16 regions of New Zealand, which takes its name from the eponymous urban area. The region encompasses the Auckland metropolitan area, smaller towns, rural areas, and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf.
Auckland, based around 2 large harbours, is a major city in the north of New Zealand’s North Island. In the centre, the iconic Sky Tower has views of Viaduct Harbour, which is full of superyachts and lined with bars and cafes. Auckland Domain, the city’s oldest park, is based around an extinct volcano and home to the formal Wintergardens. Near Downtown, Mission Bay Beach has a seaside promenade.
Devonport is a relaxed bayside village with upscale cafes and seafood restaurants, as well as classic Kiwi pubs and fish and chips shops. Small boutiques and art dealerships line Victoria Road, while Devonport and Cheltenham beaches draw crowds. The volcanic cone of North Head has harbour views and underground army tunnels. Hikers also climb Mount Victoria, passing reservoir vents decorated as mushrooms.
Affluent, residential Mount Eden is dominated by a volcanic peak also known as Maungawhau, with hiking and jogging trails leading to views over the Hauraki Gulf. The renowned All Blacks play rugby at Eden Park, where cricket matches also draw crowds. Bookshops and vintage clothes stores line Mount Eden Road, along with trendy cafes and wine bars, while the Asian eateries on Dominion Road are known for dumplings.
