Helsinki, Finland’s southern capital, sits on a peninsula in the Gulf of Finland. Its central avenue, Mannerheimintie, is flanked by institutions including the National Museum, tracing Finnish history from the Stone Age to the present. Also on Mannerheimintie are the imposing Parliament House and Kiasma, a contemporary art museum. Ornate red-brick Uspenski Cathedral overlooks a harbor.
Turku, a city on the southwest coast of Finland, straddles the Aura River. Dating from the 13th century, it's known for Turku Castle, a medieval fortress with a history museum, perched at the river mouth. Restaurants line the cobbled riverside streets. On the eastern bank lies the Old Great Square, a former trade hub, surrounded by grand buildings. The nearby Turku Cathedral houses a royal tomb and a museum.
Tampere is a city in southern Finland. It sits between Näsijärvi Lake and Pyhäjärvi Lake, with the Tammerkoski rapids in between. The Vapriikki Museum Center houses several museums, including the Natural History Museum and an exhibition about the 1918 civil war. Tampere Cathedral is known for its macabre frescoes. Kaleva Church, with its striking concrete architecture, is designed to look like a fish from above.
Known for its historic wartime ship construction, Sveaborg is an interconnected island district of Helsinki located in the Gulf of Finland. It’s home to the 18th-century Fortress of Suomenlinna, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its passageways, cannons, and a former prison. There are also museums and casual eateries, along with a beach area, a stately Royal Gate drawbridge, and a performing arts theater.
Vyborg is a town in western Russia, close to the Finnish border. Set on an island in Vyborg Bay, Vyborg Castle was built in the 13th century by Swedes. Today it houses a regional history museum. To the southeast, Hermitage-Vyborg Center exhibits paintings and artifacts from the State Hermitage Museum collection in St. Petersburg. Northwest of town, landscaped Monrepos Park is dotted with monuments and grottoes.
Leafy, residential Töölö is home to the neoclassical Parliament House and Temppeliaukio Church, carved from solid rock. Along main street Mannerheimintie, the National Museum of Finland has Viking relics, and Finlandia Hall hosts concerts and conferences. Locals head to bakeries around Töölöntori square for breakfast pastries. The Sibelius Monument is in the center of a bayside park, also named after the composer.
