The glad tidings that his mother-in-law has arrived in town reach Ike just as he is about to swallow a glass of beer. His agitation is extreme. His home life was bad enough before but after the mother arrived it is an inferno. To get a moment's respite from persecution, Ike dopes the coffee with a sleeping potion. When his wife and mother-in-law are deep in the land of dreams, he drags mother-in-law to a haystack and covers her with hay. He is spied on by some of the villagers and the report spreads that he has murdered his mother-in-law. The populace rises in a body and sets out to lynch the henpecked husband, and murder would actually have been committed had the drug's effect not worn off and the wife and her mother awakened. For his innocent transgression, Ike is forces to take a triple dose of the sleeping potion.
