Mongolia, a nation bordered by China and Russia, is known for vast, rugged expanses and nomadic culture. Its capital, Ulaanbaatar, centers around Chinggis Khaan (Genghis Khan) Square, named for the notorious founder of the 13th- and 14th-century Mongol Empire. Also in Ulaanbaatar are the National Museum of Mongolia, displaying historic and ethnographic artifacts, and the restored 1830 Gandantegchinlen Monastery.
Izumo is a city on Japan’s Honshu Island. It's known for Izumo-taisha, a sprawling Shinto shrine. The Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo explores the site’s history, which dates back to the 8th century. Nearby, the Former Taisha Station is a 1920s rail terminal built in the Imperial Crown Style. On the coast, Hinomisaki Lighthouse overlooks the sea. South, Tachikue Gorge is home to scores of Buddhist statues.
Toyohashi is a city in central Japan. The vast Non Hoi Park encompasses a botanical garden, zoo and natural history museum. North, the grounds of Yoshida Castle are known for spring cherry blossoms. The nearby Urigo Ruins are reconstructed dwellings dating from 200 CE. Futagawa Syuku Honjin Museum was once an inn on the Edo-era Tokaido Road. Boardwalks cross the wetlands of Imo Bog, home to native and rare plants.

Khentii is one of the 21 aimags of Mongolia, located in the east of the country. Its capital is Chinggis City. The aimag is named after the Khentii Mountains. It is best known as the birthplace, and likely final resting place, of Temüjin, otherwise known as Genghis Khan.

Nalaikh is one of nine districts of the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar. It has an area of 68,700 hectares and a population of 39,579 in 2022.

The opulent Meiji Shinto Shrine is known for its towering gate and surrounding woods. The Imperial Palace sits amid large public gardens.
