Austria, formally the Republic of Austria, is a landlocked country in Central Europe, lying in the Eastern Alps. It is a federation of nine federal states, one of which is the capital, Vienna, the most populous city and federal state.

Belgrade is the capital of the southeast European country of Serbia. Its most significant landmark is the Beogradska Tvrđava, an imposing fortress at the confluence of the Danube and the Sava rivers. The fort is a testament to the city’s strategic importance to the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Serbian and Austrian empires, and it's now the site of several museums as well as Kalemegdan, a vast park.

Brest is a city in southwest Belarus on the Polish border. The 19th-century Brest Hero Fortress is a celebrated site of Soviet resistance during WWII. The fortress complex includes a museum, bullet-riddled Kholmsk Gate and the huge Thirst Monument, depicting a parched soldier. Nearby, the open-air Railway Museum displays historic locomotives. Berestye Archaeological Museum preserves a 13th-century Slavic village.
