Die Wildhüterin Sara Jahnke lebt lieber in der Einsamkeit der Wälder Kanadas als unter Menschen. In ihrer brandenburgischen Heimat, bei ihrem Vater Robert Jahnke und ihrer erwachsenen Tochter Julia, hält sie es nur für begrenzte Zeit aus. Kurz vor ihrer Rückkehr nach Kanada bekommt Sara den Auftrag, eine auffällig gewordene Wölfin aufzuspüren und zu entnehmen. Als sie dabei die Leiche einer rumänischen Saisonarbeiterin findet, kommt ein ungeheuerlicher Verdacht auf. Ist Silvana das erste Opfer eines tödlichen Wolfangriffs seit mehreren hundert Jahren? Kommissar Laue, Stadtmensch und fremd in der Gegend, bittet Sara um Hilfe. Als sich deren Theorie bestätigt, dass die Wölfe Silvana nicht getötet haben, macht sich das ungleiche Ermittlerduo auf die Suche nach dem menschlichen Täter - und stößt auf erschütternde Machenschaften um die örtliche Fleischfabrik.
