Plot summary
Josef Vondrácek, a simple, downtrodden man, beat his father-in-law with an axe because he would not give him a piece of land. He prepared the deed after cold deliberation. This was the second attempt, so this crime must be classified as premeditated murder. He did it all for the field, as he defended himself. He is convinced that he needs that piece of flax to live and feels no guilt. The judge must respect the law, but he knows that this case is beyond the reach of human justice. The jury must still decide.
